FOODBALL Final conference on 14 May 2018 in Wageningen (NL)

The Food Biomarkers Alliance, FOODBALL is a project funded by the JPI HDHL in the Joint Action Biomarkers in Nutrition and Health. It aimed at identifying, quantifying and validating dietary biomarkers to obtain a good coverage of the food intake in different population groups within Europe and improve the capabilities of nutritional assessment and research.

The FOODBALL consortium includes 22 partners from 11 JPI HDHL countries and a partner from New Zealand as an observer. The project ran for three years from December 2014 to December 2017 and the finals results will be presented and discussed in the final conference that will be held on 14 May 2018 in Wageningen (NL).

Biomarkers covering several foods and food components provide an objective measure of actual intake and status and are an important and urgently needed adjunct to classical food consumption assessments. However, only a few foods are currently covered by validated intake biomarkers. Furthermore, the development and validation of biomarkers is very costly and knowledge-intensive.

FOODBALL provided a unique platform for sharing knowledge and resources between members of the scientific community, both within and beyond the project.

During the conference the main results will be presented and discussed, including:

  • Biomarker classification and validation
  • Food biomarkers discovery, validation and potential use
  • Translational perspectives underpinning food and health biomarkers
  • New matrices for biomarkers
  • New databases for food metabolome and intake biomarkers
  • FOODBALL goals and policy implications
