FAO-WHO International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition

The International Symposium, which will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome from 1 to 2 December 2016, will explore policies and programme options with a specific focus on food systems and their contribution to healthy diets and improved nutrition. It will provide countries with an opportunity to share experiences and learn about the successful implementation of policies and programmes.

The International Symposium has been developed to support the implementation of the Decade of Action

on Nutrition proclaimed in April 2016 by the UN General Assembly, following the need of Member countries for technical support to turn the commitment made during ICN2 into action.
The target audience includes government officials with policy-making and programme-design mandates from Agriculture, Nutrition, Health and other relevant sectors, as well as parliamentarians and non-state actors from civil society, private sector and research/academic institutions.
The symposium takes a systems approach and will concentrate on three main sub-themes strictly related to the strategic research agenda of the JPI HDHL:

  1. Supply side policies and measures for increasing access to healthy diets.
  2. Demand side policies and measures for increasing access and empowering consumers to choose healthy diets.
  3. Measures to strengthen accountability, resilience, and equity within the food system.
